Description
This Cryptocoryne is a brown-red form of the time-tested Cryptocoryne undulata from Sri Lanka. It develops quite narrow leaves with finely wavy margin. The leaf underside shows purple-red tones, the upper side is red-brown with darker marbling. The appearance of the plant also varies depending on conditions.
As well as the other Crypts of the Sri Lanka species group, Cryptocoryne undulata 'Red' is easy to grow, tolerating a wide range of conditions. It still grows with little lighting but gets quite tall (up to ca. 30 cm) and rather green then. However it remains lower and shows its most attractive colouring with good lighting and nutrient supply that also enhances considerably its growth rate. As well as many other Crypts, this C. undulata selection propagates by undergrund runners, forming a dense stand with time.
Cryptocoryne undulata 'Red' is a versatile aquarium plant, especially useable in the midground. With its reddish colours, it provides a nice contrast to green plants and fits well with hardscape in red-brown tones.
