The Cyprichromis leptosome Cichlid is a very active cichlid that is native to Lake Tanganyika in Africa. This species inhabits open water areas in the middle and upper levels of the water column. It congregates in shoals and is very peaceful for a cichlid, although there is a clear hierarchy in every group. Males occupy an 18 inch territory in which they welcome females, which are mouth brooders when spawning. Mature males develop very striking blue and yellow coloration while females are much less colourful. This "dither" fish encourages more timid fish to come out and about with its relentless swimming and activity.

The Cyprichromis leptosome Cichlid will thrive in an aquarium with areas of rockwork as well as plenty of open swimming space. This species is not aggressive for a Tanganyikan cichlid, but males will defend territory from other males with vigor. It is very social, so it should be kept in groups of at least 6-8 specimens. Territoriality is typically at its peak during spawning. Dwarf shrimp and other small, delicate invertebrates should not be kept with the Blue Jumbo Kitumba Speckleback Sardine Cichlid, but many other Tanganyikan cichlids are excellent tank mates. If spawning is desired, tank mates of other species should be kept to a minimum or avoided altogether unless the aquarium is of considerable size with ample cover/decor.

Feeding is simple for the unfussy Cyprichromis leptosome Kitumba Speckleback Sardine Cichlid. High-quality dry, frozen, and live meaty foods will all be readily accepted. Quality and variety are the keys to a diet that will ensure that this fish maintains optimal health and coloration, so this species should not be fed dry foods exclusively.
